I LOVE the BMW X5 with all its luxery and high end features. If you don't know what a BMW X5 is, its a mid-size crossover SUV sold by BMW since 1999. Its drive shaft is a all wheel drive vehicle with two gasoline available engines including the inline-6s and V8 engines. The BMW X5 wheels are standard at 20'. Touching on the 5 series, the BMW M5 is a high performance version of the BMW 5-Series automobile made by BMW Motorsport. The M5 series was first introduced at the Amsterdam Motor Show in 1984 and has had many body styles over the years of development. Being that the M5 is a high performance automobile it would hold true that the BMW M5 Wheels would also have to be high performance.
The BMW M5 when it was first introduced came with an unusual wheel design. Between 1989-1992 the M5 featured M-System wheels. These wheels had a diameter of 17x8J and came with a bolted-on wheel cover. Beneath laid a black 5-spoke alloy wheel.
1992 brought changes to the BMW M5 Wheel. A new cover was produced — the M-System II. The original intent of the M-System cover was to direct more air to the brake assembly to increase cooling. The cover actually integrated a fin assembly behind the cover. The M-System II covers, known as the "throwing stars" did not have as much capability to direct air to the brake assemblies. In May 1994, the M5 came with M Parallel wheels that did away with the cover.

Check your tire pressures before deciding whether you need wheel alignment. Opposing tires that do not have balanced tire pressure can indicate the unnecessary need for wheel alignment. Wheel alignment is the science of aligning the rear wheels to run in the same tracks as the front wheels. Correct wheel alignment can improve the mileage tires will last by up to 10 000 kms.
I was driving from Durban to Nelspruit eying the craters euphemistically referred to as potholes. I am sure I saw a Landrover fall into the one, but on closer inspection could not find any positive proof barring what looked like the tracks of some Continental tires. The bottom was not visible so we remain unsure of whether there were any survivors. Back to my point, beside the fact, that not all of us drive rugged 4x4 vehicles. Believe me, they also need wheel alignment after a trip on those Mpumalanga roads. I got to wondering about how often wheel alignment should be done. I spoke to Gary at HI-Q on my return to Nelspruit who said "It's a good idea to check your alignment every 10 - 12000 kms"
Being a little cheap, I asked Gary if that was not just to make the wheel alignment companies more money. He assured me that the cost of wheel alignment vs the cost of tires made it a bargain. If you had to replace those tires on your BMW every 10 000 km's because your wheel alignment was off kilter it would cost you a lot more. Knowing that I had just spent R 2 grand on two tires it starts making sense.
If your camber or toe in are out you can wear a tire down to canvass in as little as 3000 km's. I did that once back when I hit a kerb with my Mazda tree to tree in the eighties. In essence, Gary just reinforced what I already knew. Pop into HI-Q down in Riverside Industrial Park right opposite Volvo and Land Rover on the way to the mall. Gary and his team will freely advise you if their services are essential.

At the Coca-Cola 600 held at the Lowe’s Motor Speedway, Denny Hamlin finished ninth after the grueling 600 miles of racing. During the latter stages of the race, Hamlin opted to go to the pit lane for fuel. This move cost him a possible top five finish since those who took the top four spots gambled and did not go into the pit lane to have their fuel topped up. While the ninth place finish is enough to keep Hamlin on the fourth spot at this season’s championship race, it was the job that his pit crew performed that drew some attention. His pit crew won the weekly Checkers/Rally’s Double Drive-Thru Challenge. The win by the pit crew moved them to the second spot overall for the entire season.
The 423.882 time that Hamlin’s pit crew posted gave them the win at the Pit Crew Challenge. Hamlin has this to say about his team’s performance: “It was another good night for the No. 11 FedEx crew in Charlotte. Our team chemistry is really good right now and it's showing in our performance across the board. We are getting closer to that win every week and with this crew I know we're going to get it soon. I wouldn't be surprised if they win more awards for their efforts.”
Winning the challenge means that Hamlin’s pit crew will be taking home $11,000 as their prize. At the conclusion of the ongoing Nextel Cup Series, the team with the most wins will be receiving $111,150. Hamlin’s pit crew is composed of: Scott Wood (jackman), Scott Merritt (front-tire carrier), Dennis Terry (front-tire changer), Heath Cherry (rear-tire carrier), Jonathan Sherman (rear-tire changer), Brad Rothlin (gasman), John Eicher (catch can) and Bobby Christensen (eighth-man). These men provide a good support for Hamlin which has enabled him to perform at a respectable level so far this season. The team changes tires, and refills Hamlin’s car with fuel during races much like one would change Weathertec mats on their road cars.
So far, Hamlin’s team has won three races this season. The first one came in Bristol at the Food City 500 held last March 25. During that race, Hamlin finished 14th. The second win posted by the No. 11 FedEx crew came during the Subway Fresh Fit 500 held at the Phoenix International Raceway in Avondale, Arizona. During that race, Denny Hamlin finished third on his Chevrolet Impala. With fourteen more races before the Chase for the Cup, Hamlin needs his team to continue the way they are performing to ensure his place at the ten-race series which will determine the champion this season.

Often Automotive Think Tanks will stay within their boundaries - The Auto Industry when doing there thinking. The Online Think Tank takes auto issues very seriously and yet we do not only talk about automobiles, however we are hard core when it comes to that industry and we read all their Online Newsletters, Industry Trade Journals and stay up on all the DOT issues and government regulations as well.

The US Auto Industry lobbied hard against the newest fuel standards, while Toyota and Honda are already there, the US auto industry fought hard to limit the excessive fuel standards. Meanwhile the EU is trying to help their own manufacturers while getting regulations put in place against the US manufacturers, which is hard to do without hurting their own.
"The EU wants to limit CO2 to 120 grams per kilometer by 2015."
The head of several companies said that the deadline was not possible, which is interesting as the EU is using the Global Warming issues to promote its businesses over other industrialized nations, like the US and China. Of course the Germans make many models of large cars, still the Italians and French who make smaller cars still seem to believe they cannot do it, that is to say limit the CO2 that much, but Volkswagon thinks it can, yet still joined the others in lobbying against the tightened emissions.

Germany's big automaker Volkswagen said it is planning to make a curiously designed car that will use just one liter (a quarter of a gallon) of fuel per 100 kilometer (62 miles)."We want to put 'one-liter car' on the market by 2010," the group's supervisory board chairman, Ferdinand Piech, told the German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung at Frankfurt's' International Auto Show.
The vehicle is not the most pretty in the world, and its engine only has one-cylinder and is a diesel, but 100 mpg, is attainable they say. Volkswagon says it wants to sell the car for under $5,000 and I bet people in the US right about now would love to have one too. Meanwhile the Chinese are getting ready to flood the US market with new Chinese made automobiles, the first dealership opens in 2008 in New Jersey. The panel will hear testimony from federal officials and auto industry executives during its first public meeting in Washington on Monday. With Congress moving toward passing some kind of increase in fuel-economy standards and President George W. Bush ordering his administration to set its own increases by the end of next year, the updated report will act as a road map for many future decisions by federal regulators. The 2002 edition concluded ... that the industry could raise the efficiency of its cars by up to 27 percent and its trucks by 42 percent over a decade -- to roughly 30 miles per gallon -- with no changes in weight, size or performance. U.S. cars and trucks are expected to average 26.4 m.p.g. in the 2007 model year, the highest level ever, according to federal estimates. But automakers have long objected to the 2002 report, saying it overstated the benefits of new technologies and understated the costs and engineering work needed to put them into vehicles.

Formula One team McLaren must pay a $100m fine and has been kicked out of the constructors' championship for spying on rival team Ferrari. The decision by the governing body of the Federation Internationale de L'Automobile (FIA) means McLaren is out of the constructors' championship this year but drivers Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso can continue to compete in the drivers' competition. McLaren did not accept the verdict. In a statement Ron Dennis said: "Having been at the hearing today I do not accept that we deserved to be penalised in this way."
6. The DOT has stated that Bike Lanes take monies away that could be used to make bridge infrastructure stronger.
Bicycles VS Cars, well we know who will win on the street in an accident, and most likely in the courtroom of public opinion, as we do not wish anymore bridges to be collapsed and yet, we need more bike lanes. Bicycle and car accidents kill way too many people each year and Americans are way too fat, they need to exercise too. The Department of Transportation - DOT stated this because they do not consider bicycles a real form of transportation, as very few people use them in that way, most of the bike riding is for recreation and staying in shape. In this article I will share with you the first part of the Sears tire selection guide that I can impart with the sears tires lovers. I will explain the different types of tires and their pros and cons.
First, I categorized the tires by its different methods, which are categories by performance, by the type of vehicle they will be used on and lastly by special usage categories. On this part 1 of my article I will share with you about the category by performance.
Under categories by performance I divide it again into three portions which are all season tires, second performance all season tires and last the ultra high performance all season tires.
All Season Tires, is also know as all weather tires. This tires (sears tires) are best for : most passenger vehicles (Most new vehicles are sold with all weather tires); year around good performance in all kinds of weather; lowest tread wear;decent traction; most comfortable ride and for most economical (prices)...But, it is no high controlled-handling for extremely wet or snowy roads. If you live in regions with very wet or snowy condition, consider other tires. When it comes to cost, it is typically ranges between $30 to $90 per wheels. This all season sears tires are usually available for tires sizes in 13, 14, and 15 inches.
Performance All Season Tires: These tires are best for better handling for wet and snowy surfaces and lose some ride comfort to get better traction. But... since softer materials is used to get better traction, tread are usually higher and somewhat less comfortable ride. The cost of these tires are usually from $50 to $140 dollars per wheel and it is available in sizes 15, 16 and 17 inches. These kind of sears tires is usually for passenger and light truck or SUV vehicles.
The Ultra High Performance All Season Tires; these are best for sports cars and other high performance vehicles, best for greatest control and handling, best cornering; best for increased speed rating and summer condition. But again....they have the quickest tread wear, and not designed to be used in very wet and snowy condition.People typically switch to all season or winter tires during winter months. The cost of these tires usually ranges from $80 to $180. § If your wheel rims are small, you may have extra cost of replacing them as well. These tires are also available in 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20 inches and for the used of passenger vehicle, light trucks or SUV vehicles.

As winter approaches, vehicle owners must be reminded of the proper way of maintaining tire pressure. Hence, The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers will be launching Tire Pressure Safety Campaign for said purpose.
"Cooler fall temperatures are here and the holiday driving season is around the corner. Our goal is to urge the driving public to check their vehicle's tire pressure at least once a month and before going on long driving trips," said Fred Webber, President and CEO of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers.
Webber further explained, "Vehicles are being equipped with Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems and we want to educate the driving public about what these new symbols mean in their vehicles and why maintaining proper tire pressure is important."
The importance of maintaining correct tire pressure cannot be overstated. Maintaining it helps optimize fuel economy and tire performance. In fact, correct tire pressure boosts tire comfort, performance and durability. In cases of deflection, properly maintained tires will remain in superb condition. Moreover, it will also preclude excessive tread squirm and sidewall flexing. Right tire pressure stabilizes tire's structure. Aside from that, it also enhances responsiveness, handling and traction of the tires. Moreover, when the vehicles tire pressure is under inflated, it can put the lives of the passengers at risk. It compromises both safety and fuel-efficiency.
One of the important external factors of tire pressure is temperature change. In fact, for every 10-degree change in temperature, a tire can lose approximately one pound per square inch (PSI).
"Maintaining proper tire pressure is something that many people may neglect, but is vital for the safety and fuel efficiency of the vehicle," said Nicole Nason, National Highway Traffic Safety (NHTSA) Administrator. "All of us can take simple everyday steps to enhance automobile safety and NHTSA urges everyone to remember to check their tire pressure."
Safety is the focal reason why tire pressure must be checked regularly. Under inflated tires causes accidents due to skidding, hydroplaning, loss of control and the like. Another reason for maintaining it right is fuel-efficiency. The latter is lowered by 1 percent for every 3-PSI under inflation. Hence, a correctly inflated tire equates to 1 free tank each year.
According to Webber, all new vehicles will be equipped with Tire Pressure Monitoring Symbols (TPMS) by 2008. Moreover, expect BMW parts as well as those of Mazda, Toyota, Volkswagen and the rest of the members of the alliance to incorporate the device soon.

Sport utility vehicle sales continue to plummet in the face of surging gasoline prices now topping the three dollar per gallon mark. Indeed, this segment of the vehicle market has produced some of the largest profits for automakers globally and this loss of sales is impacting manufacturer bottom lines the world over. Yet, demand hasn’t dried up altogether and a rebound is possible once gas prices stabilize. For BMW owners, a larger vehicle such as the BMW X5 SAV is almost a necessity no matter what gas prices may be. Yes, the BMW X5 SAV is big topping out at just over 5,000 lbs. Are you in the market for a luxury sport utility vehicle? If so, BMW’s largest model may just have something to offer to you.
For the record, BMW calls their SUVs an SAV: a sport activity vehicle. BMW’s marketing arm felt that customers should know that beyond it’s off road prowess, the BMW X5 SAV can tow as much as 6,000 pounds; carry bicycles with an optional bike rack; hold a canoe on top of its roof; and stow camping or other activity gear in its generous sized rear quarter.
Although new to the game when its first SAV was released during the late 1990s, the technology powering this vehicle is not. Uniting BMW car technology [the X5 is based on the BMW 5 Series] with renowned Range Rover SUV engineering, BMW has fully harnessed the relationship it has with its British off road division. This is important to note as BMW entered the SUV market fresh without having had the benefit of producing a capable sport utility vehicle previously.
The chief attribute of the BMW X5 is its size as the vehicle can carry five passengers comfortably and all of the stuff needed to transport them to their various activities. Furthermore, since the X5 is based on the BMW 5 Series, the SAV shares many features with its passenger car stable mate including: four wheel independent suspension; front and rear wheel anti-roll bars; speed sensing steering; four wheel disc brakes with ABS; electronic stability with traction control and brake assist; and a host of passenger comfort items including Bluetooth wireless; low tire pressure warning; premium sound system; on-board computer; and power everything. A retractable cargo cover completes the BMW X5’s bountiful storage offerings.
Engine choices include a 3.0L I6, a 4.4L V8 or a potent 4.8L V8. Surprisingly, the EPA fuel mileage figures for the smallest and largest engines are the same: you can expect a combined 18 mpg when driving either model numbers that line up with the industry average. A diesel aspirated engine is available for the European market but no plans have been put in place to make that engine available in the US. The BMW X5 is built exclusively in South Carolina, but likely the diesel engine does not meet the stringent US government [EPA] pollution requirements.
BMW is fast at work preparing its second generation X5 a vehicle that should be longer and heavier than the current model. Automotive experts are suggesting that the new BMW X5 will add a third row of seats to accommodate two more passengers and to differentiate the model from its slightly smaller, but also five passenger capacity X3 stable mate.
Prices for the current BMW X5 start out at just over $42,000 and top out at more than $70,000 with all options included. Chief competitors for the BMW X5 include the Mercedes M Class, the Porsche Cayenne, and the Acura MDX.
